The wrestling team went 2-0 on Wednesday, beating Boyne City 66-6 and Traverse City St. Francis 43-24. Winning two matches were Alex Moore, Caleb Baker, Justin Palmer, Mandy Andrews, Max Huspen, Jake Huspen, Danny Bonamie and Logan Malonen. Winning one match were Rodrigo Lazaro, Jordan Peters and Payton Collen. The team is now 9-4 and will travel to Escanaba on Saturday for the 23-team Escanaba Elks Invitational. Boys varsity basketball beat Cheboygan 54-44 Wednesday night. The Viking defense was stifling in the first half, giving up only 13 points. Leading scorers for the VIkes were Tristan Demlow with 24 points and Maddox Mead and Kaleb Hall with 10 points each. The trio of Jacob Marshall, Alex Hager and Landon Hoffman played with great energy and gave the VIkes solid minutes. The Vikings play at Harbor Springs on Friday.

On December 28, the wrestling team went 2-3 at the Reed City Holiday Rumble. The team beat Newaygo 54-27 and Comstock Park 42-36 and lost to Hastings 72-12, Holton 48-36 and Ithaca 45-33. Logan Malonen and Jake Huspen were 5-0. Alex Moore was 3-0. Max Huspen was 4-1. Justin Palmer, Jordan Peters, Ryan Stade, Molly Wright and Zeke Wright had 2 wins each. On December 27, the wrestling team had two girls wrestle in the Traverse City West girls holiday tournament. Mandy Andrews went 2-0 and took 1st place in her weight. Drew is headed to The Citadel.
A quick start forcing several turnovers allowed the varsity girls to jump out to an early lead and they never looked back, defeating Ogemaw Heights 53-35. We had a short stall in the second quarter due to some foul issues, but reestablished the defensive pressure in the second half, turning the pressure into points and working hard on getting into the paint to score. The offense was led by Makayla Watkins with 27 points. Ali Helinski had 10 points and both Emma Kuziel and Shelby Swander chipped in with 4 apiece. #leadthecharge

JV girls basketball brought in a win after a tough 4-quarter battle against Ogemaw Heights Wednesday night. Lahna Malonen and Ali Vannuck brought up the tempo of the game, making a big appearance in the fourth quarter with aggressive defense and tough rebounding. JV boys basketball won an electric game 32-31 over Ogemaw Heights Wednesday night. Noah Gabriel drained two clutch free throws to put Grayling up by 1 with 11 seconds left. The team played lockdown defense the last few seconds for the win. Leading scorers were David Neal and Myles Mead with 7 apiece, Noah Gabriel and Jackson Marshall added 6 each. In a great defensive effort, the varsity girls were able to secure the 66-49 win over Houghton Lake last night. Great defensive pressure forced many turnovers that Makayla Watkins turned into breakaway layups. The Lady Vikes jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. The energy on the bench, on the floor, and in the stands was amazing and helped push the girls to score 66 points, a team-high, as well as the highest score total since 2015. The offense was led by Makayla Watkins with 27 points. Cali D'Amour scored 11, and Ali Helinski and Emma Kuziel chipped in with 8 apiece. #leadthecharge

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK Kyleigh Ross (powerlifting) and Logan Malonen (wrestling) Kyleigh Ross, with a lift total of 570 pounds, took 1st place for her weight class at the first powerlifting meet of the season. This first place finish already qualified her for the JV State meet in March! Logan Malonen has started the season 11-0 with 11 pins. On Saturday, he recorded his 100th career pin in the Don Ferguson Invitational. He has won the first two tournaments of the year.

Our GHS wrestling team won the Don Ferguson Invitational on Saturday, scoring 177.5 team points. Montrose took second with 141.5 points. Jake Huspen and Logan Malonen were individual champions while Alex Moore and Caleb Baker were runners up. Ryan Stade was 3rd, Jordan Peters and Danny Bonamie were 4th, Justin Palmer, Liam Allen and Max Huspen were 5th and Payton Collen was 6th. Zeke Wright and Rodrigo Lazaro also scored valuable team points. In the girls tournament, Mandy Andrews was 2nd and Molly Wright was 3rd. The Grayling Vikings competed in their first ever powerlifting competition on Saturday. Kyleigh Ross placed 1st in her weight class, while Vada Cloum took 2nd. Varsity boys basketball picked up a great 54-52 win over an undefeated Charlevoix at Charlevoix Friday night. The Vikings led from start to finish in what turned into a physical and exciting contest. The Vikings were led by Tristan Demlow with 26 points. Ethan Kucharek scored 12 and Kaleb Hall added 10 points. Next up, the Vikings take on Kingsley tonight at home.
