ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Kendra Allen (JV basketball) and Trevor Cvitkovich (varsity skiing)
Kendra Allen has a non-stop work ethic in games and practice. Her hustle during games brings up the intensity of the team and drastically changes the play on the court. Kendra had a double-double on January 17 with 13 points and 10 rebounds!
Trevor started his senior campaign with a great performance in GS. In our first Lake Michigan Conference meet on January 11 at Nub's Nob, Trevor placed 5th in giant slalom. In slalom, Trevor was sitting in 4th place after his first run before blowing a shoe for a DQ. Trevor provides great leadership, humor and fun to the ski team.
Today, Bryce Malcolm signed his National Letter of Intent to bowl at Davenport University! Congratulations, Bryce!

In a great team effort, the varsity girls basketball team was able to pull out a 69-49 win against rival Kalkaska last night. We were able to apply great defensive pressure forcing many turnovers that led to points for us. After a slightly slow start, the defensive intensity increased and we took control of the game and never looked back after the first quarter. The intense pressure was enforced by Amanda Lewis, Oliva Duba, and Emma Kucharek. The Vikings moved the ball great on offense, looking for the open teammate, allowing for almost everyone to get in the scoring column. We were also able to have three players in double figures, including a game-high for Cali D'Amour with 19, Makayla Watkins with 18, and Emma Kuziel with 15 points.
JV girls basketball brought in an impressive win last night, defeating Kalkaska 44 to 38! The girls all played 4 quarters with amazing intensity. Molly Montgomery and Kendra Allen both pulled in a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds each. Leah Kirmo added 8 points and Katy Hayden scored 5. Alle VanNuck, Allyson Albert and Emma Kucharek added tough defense, forcing multiple turnovers.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Makynna Holmes (bowling) and Brady Hunter (JV basketball)
Makynna has become a leader for our team this year and with conference play just starting, she is poised to have a great season.
Brady has been the heartbeat of this team so far. He never complains, works hard in practices, makes the most of his time on the court, and continually puts the team before himself. Against Cheboygan, Brady had 3 points but, most importantly, had 4 offensive rebounds and played the most tiring position on defense while not wanting to come out. His heart and effort shine.
Boys basketball hosts East Jordan tonight beginning at 5:30. All the action can be viewed from anywhere using these NFHS subscription links. Go Vikes!

Varsity girls bowling opened the season at Gaylord on Saturday and came home 1-1. Match one was a battle and Cheboygan came out on top, 16-14. Lahken Forbes had the high game with a 161 and the high series with a 313 (161 and 152). The team struggled against Rogers City, but were able to pull off a 22-8 victory. Makynna Holmes had the high game with a 197 and the high series with a 354 (197 and 157). We can expect some high scores from Makynna, our lone senior, this year!
Varsity boys bowling kicked off conference play 2-0 on Saturday! The first match was hard-fought, and they won 15.5-14.5. The second match started off slow, but they were able to pull away with a 23-7 victory. Top performers were Gage Modert with a 231 game, Mitch Harrington with 225, 223 and 222 games, Gibsen Barnett with a 204 and Bryce Malcolm with a 191. The JV team got a good grasp of what’s to come from the rest of the season. Great job, Vikings!
Varsity girls basketball played a very hard-fought battle and came out victorious, defeating Traverse City St. Francis 45-39 Thursday night. From the first tip, Amanda Lewis opened the game with a great mid-range jump shot followed by two 3-pointers from MaKayla Watkins. Defensive pressure by Amanda Lewis, Jill Hartman and Olivia Duba was huge for us and excellent rebounding from Cali D'Amour, Emma Kuziel and Ali Helinski were also huge aspects of this win. The Lady Vikes only gave up the lead one time and it was quickly taken back as result of defensive pressure and crashing the boards. MaKayla Watkins led the scoring with 21 points and Cali D'Amour had 12, Amanda Lewis added 4 and Jill Hartman and Emma Kuziel chipped in with 3 apiece.
JV girls basketball held the TCSF Gladiators to 31 points Thursday night with their aggressive defense and multiple steals. Molly Montgomery led the team with 8 points. Kendra Allen contributed 6 and Leah Kirmo added 3. Allesyn VanNuck, Katy Hayden and Lahna Malonen all pulled down some big rebounds, while Lexi Hudsen and Allyson Albert contributed with multiple assists.
