The varsity boys basketball team played solid in a 73-40 victory over East Jordan at home Monday night. The boys played with great energy that started on the defensive end of the floor. Ten players got into the scorebook during the game.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Katy Hayden (JV basketball) and the varsity boys bowling team
Sophomore team captain Katy Hayden made a huge presence as a leader on the court this week. Katy is leading the team in both scoring and rebounding. Her work ethic in games and her ability to give direction on the court has made an amazing impact this past week.
The varsity boys bowling team has been working hard all year to win the bowling conference and, although we didn't win the regular season conference championship, our goal to place in regionals next weekend to get to the state finals is still achievable. Tom, Gage, Gib, Mitch and Bryce can make it happen! Wish them luck and send them good vibes!

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Girls Ski Team and Myles Mead (JV basketball)
Coach Wagner nominated the entire girls' team for athlete of the week! Recently, the girls took 2nd in the Benzie Invitational, won a slalom event in an LMC race, and consistently put girls (any of them) in the top 10 at any given race. They are fun, tenacious and spirited (that's a nice way of saying strong-willed!). They finished 2nd at the Clare Invitational on Monday and they'll compete at Regionals next Monday. Pictured L-R: Josie Calvin, Luna Gauthier, Quincy Stirling, Nico Triebold, Tierney Hartman and Dakota Batway. Not pictured is Ellie Muraida.
Myles has been a leader on and off the court for us. We have had a rollercoaster of a season, but Myles has stayed patient and hungry through it all. Myles leads the team in points and is a team captain, which I fully expect to never change throughout this high school career.

Bowling against Cheboygan, we only had three girls for most of the match and four for the last game. They gave it their all but fell short. Our high scores were 168 and 161 (329 series) from Lahken Forbes and 145 (258 series) from Brooklyn Barnett. Shout out to Marie Baker who shot her high game of the year in match play with a 120 after shooting her personal best 130 at practice on Thursday!
In match two against Boyne City, we still only had 4 girls and, despite their best efforts, lost 28-2. Lahken Forbes bowled a 178 and 153 (331 series) and Brooklyn Barnett bowled 148 ( 266 series).
Also, congratulations to Makynna Holmes and Ahryn Lavine who had a band competition that day and both made it to States!

On Saturday, boys bowling had a great day as a team and, individually, they had a few stand out games and series. We suffered another hard loss to Cheboygan in the first match. We just started off way too slow on the Baker games and they came out hot. We were down 10 points before we could get the motor running. Once they secured the victory, we bowled our best ever total score as a team in a game. As a team, we totaled 1,071 pins and an amazing average of 214.2 for each bowler! It was so fun to watch and even other teams' coaches and fans said it was the best they had seen.
In the second match, we finally scored in our Baker games against Gaylord. It was our best series and game in Baker this year: 213-189:402 total. Overall, the boys bowled well in the second match and came out victorious. Let's ride this wave right into conference and regional competition!
Averages for the day were Bryce Malcolm at 209, Mitchel Harrington with 185.75, Gibsen Barnett with 190.5, Gage Modert at 166.5, and Tom Helsel with a 184.75.

Next up is team districts at home on Wednesday night.

In a game that had it all -- excitement, joy and pain -- the varsity girls played the best game of the season Friday night against a top team, not only in our conference, but in the state. The girls played their hearts out, but came up just shy in a 63-65 loss to top-ranked Harbor Springs. "Our players worked so hard on both ends of the floor, communicating on defense and moving the ball to create great looks on the offensive side of the ball. Even though we came up short in the end on a last-second shot that rolled off the rim, I am so proud of the fight and grit this team has," said Coach Brandt. "They will not back down no matter the opponent. This team is here to battle and that's what we did tonight." Makayla Watkins led Viking scorers with 26 points and she set a school record of 107 steals on the season. Alison Helinski knocked down 10 points and both Amanda Lewis and Emma Kuziel scored 8.

Last weekend, Mark Sloan was honored as the Michigan High School Tennis Coaches Association 2023 Coach of the Year. We are grateful and proud to have Mark as our Viking tennis coach. Congratulations, Mark, and thank you for all you do for our students and tennis program!
JV boys basketball won again Thursday night by a score of 44-30. It was a revenge game against a Harbor Springs team that got us earlier in the year and the Vikings pulled it out. We were led with 18 points from David Neal and 11 from Myles Mead. The team is on a 3-game win streak and hungry for more!
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Molly Wright (varsity wrestling) and Gavin Cvitkovich (varsity powerlifting)
Molly is 17-7 on the season. She has recently taken fourth place at the Mio Girls Invitational and the Ovid Elsie Girls Invitational.
Gavin placed third at the Millington powerlifting meet. He had a great day lifting! Gavin squatted 465, benched 250 and deadlifted 460 for 1,175 total weight. He is currently one of the top 20 lifters in Michigan, qualifying him for varsity state competition.
