The soccer team played Boyne City Monday night and, despite our girls battling hard, Boyne was able to get the win 6-1. Edie Boik had the goal off of a free kick. It was a long rocket of a shot over the head of the keeper. Emma Kuziel had 10 saves.

Varsity softball played in a tournament at Central Montcalm on Saturday and came home champions. Jessica Campbell pitched a no-hitter in game one's 10-0 victory over Kent City, striking out 12 of the 18 batters she faced in six innings. The Vikings trailed Central Montcalm 0-1 for most of game two before coming back to win 5-2. Anna Wood hit 6 for 7, Kendra Allen was 5 for 8 and Jillian Hartman hit 3 for 6. Leticia Sanchez displayed some terrific baserunning.

The track team competed at Charleviox yesterday in the D3 regional championships. In order to make it to states, competitors must place in the top two of the event or meet the qualifying time/distance/height. Out of 15 teams the boys team took 7th and the girls placed 8th. Making it to states again this year is Rylan Finstrom in discus and shot, and she broke her own record in shot with a throw of 44’3”. Kaleb Hall threw a monster throw in his last discus attempt to take third, breaking the school record with a throw of 140’5” and making it to states. Ethan Kucharek took 3rd in the 800 meters, but made the state qualifying time of 2:03. Andrew Moore is going back to states in the 3200 meters, taking first at regionals. The men's 4 x 800 team of Tristan Demlow, Kale Black, Drew Moore, and Ethan Kucharek took 2nd and will be going to states. Other top finishers were: Leo Bertoncello, 6th in long jump and 7th in the 100 meter; Cole Smith, 6th in the 400 meter; Tristan Demlow and Kale Black, 4th and 6th respectively in the 800 meter; the men's 4 x 100 team, 7th; the men's 4 x 400 team, 6th; Allison Helinksi, 6th in discus; the women's 4 x 800 team, 5th; the women's 4 x 400 team, 4th; Nico Triebold, 5th in the 800 meter; Maya Duncombe, 8th in the 400 meter.

The golf team was on the Moor Course at Boyne Highlands on Tuesday for the Harbor Springs Invitational. A team score of 377 put the Vikings in 7th place out of 11 teams. It was a struggle from the jump on a challenging golf course. Bryce Malcolm shot a 90 to take 19th place, finishing strong with a flurry of pars on the back nine. Alex Hager finished 23rd with a 93, beating his personal best round by a stroke. Next up is the Jim Glynn Invite at Belvedere.

The soccer team defeated Beaverton 7-0 Tuesday night. Emma Kuziel and Shelby Swander combined for 11 saves. Lilly Odden and Edie Boik each had three goals. Quincy Stirling had three assists and a goal. Jaden Gabriel had one assist.

Varsity baseball split against Onaway Tuesday night. Corbin Allen pitched 5.2 innings in the 4-7 game one loss. He struck out 10, walked five and gave up three hits and five runs. In relief, Brodie Gross had one strikeout and allowed two walks, one hit and two runs. Gross pitched two innings of game two's 21-7 win. He gave up six walks, and four runs while striking out two. Reliever Vaughn Gaertner, pitched three innings and struck out three, allowing two hits and three runs. On offense, Allen hit 6 for 7 with two doubles, three runs, six RBI and five stolen bases. Jake Huspen was 4 for 6 with two RBI, four runs and a stolen base. Austin Schwartz went 3 for 5 with a double, an RBI and four runs scored. Gross hit 3 for 6, scoring three runs, collecting four RBI and stealing two bases. Dayton Joseph was 2 for 4 with an RBI, four runs scored and a stolen base. Mason Strohpaul got a hit with 2 RBI and scored two runs.
The tennis team traveled to Boyne Mountain for an all doubles team tournament yesterday. Sweeping the one spot were Brittlynn Elliott and Jocelyn Millikin with wins over Boyne, Charlevoix, and East Jordan. Brylee Sheldon and Katie Mahaffy won all three matches in the number 2 position. GHS had 10 teams in the tournament with multiple wins. Regionals are Friday in Traverse City.

Varsity softball won a pair against Charlevoix Monday night, 9-4 and 16-4. The Viking bats were hot! In the unusual category, Anna Wood was hit by the pitch six times and Ally Walters reached base every at bat, walking five times and getting hit by the pitch once.

The soccer team took on #1 in the conference TCSF last night and lost 2-5. Edie Boik and Lilly Odden each scored a long ball shot over the TCSF keeper's head. Each goal was assisted by Olivia Duba. Sixty students from Mr. Kulhanek's creative writing classes competed in rap battles last week. Each student composed a slam poetry piece and performed it during class, competing against another student as determined by a bracket system. Students from other classes were also in attendance and all observers voted, moving winners along in the bracket. When all was said and done, Brett Peterson was crowned the champion and Joyce Van Dixhoorn and David Longstaff tied for second place.

Emily Kline (JV softball) and Gage Modert (varsity golf)
Emily Kline was 1 for 2 with a double and one RBI during our season finale vs. Elk Rapids. She had several put-outs on defense playing third base vs. the Elks. Overall, Emily led our team in doubles (5) and triples (2) this year. She was second on the team in batting average (.375), hits (17) and RBI (18).
Gage has put together an impressive season so far with a team-best scoring average of 86.1 and a few top-10 finishes to his name. Gage finished in the top 14 of the LMC championship to earn an All-Conference Honorable Mention and has stepped up as a senior leader on our team.

The track team competed in the Manton Ranger Invite on Friday and the boys' team took home a 3rd place trophy. The top finishers for both teams were: Rylan Finstrom, who took first in shot and discus and set meet records for both with throws of 42’ and 145’6”. Cole Smith took 1st in the 400 meter with a time of 55.40. Drew Moore took first in the 1600 meter with a time of 4:42. Leo Bertoncello took 2nd in the long jump, 2nd in the 200 meter, and 3rd in the 100 meter. Kale Black took 2nd in the 800 meter. Kaleb Hall took 2nd in discus. Nico Triebold took 2nd in the 800 meter and 3rd in the 1600 meter. Gavin Cvitkovich took 3rd in discus. The 4 x 800 coed relay team of Nico Triebold, Adrianna Soria, Tristan Demlow, and Kale Black took 3rd. The 4 x 400 relay team of Cole Smith, Ethan Kucherak, Dom Demeere and Kale Black took first with a time of 3:43.

Girls soccer took on Charlevoix on Friday night. Charlevoix came out putting on a lot of pressure and pouring on shots. Emma Kuziel, in goal, made some great saves and our defense kept pushing up, causing Charlevoix to continually be offside. With 9 minutes remaining in the half Edie Boik broke away to the top of the 18 off of a pass from Jaden Gabriel and scored a long ball shot over the retreating keeper. Charlevoix responded with 9 minutes remaining in the game for a final score of 1-1. Emma Kuziel had 23 saves.

Varsity tennis traveled to Boyne Mountain for a doubleheader. In the first match, the Vikes defeated Boyne 7-1. Brittlynn Elliott, Jocelyn Millikin and Katie Mahaffy won in singles. Brylee Sheldon came oh-so-close, dropping a 9-11 tiebreaker in her second ever singles match. In doubles, Jayden Partello and Jorgie Bidwell, Makynna Holmes and Karlie Smith, Brooklynn Laskowski and Aryanna Florschuetz, Emma Smith and Grace Fogle all won. The 3rd ranked TCSF team won the second match of the day 7-1. The highlight of the evening was the doubles team of Brooklynn Laskowski and Aryanna Florschuetz winning 6-4, 7-5 over the Glads. The team plays in a quad at Boyne Mountain on Monday.

Varsity softball took two from Elk Rapids Thursday night, 2-1 and 9-3. There was great pitching from Jessica Campbell and Cali D'Amour and Mandy Andrews had a great night at the plate. D'Amour hit her third dinger of the season.

JV softball split a doubleheader last night vs. Elk Rapids, winning game one 4-3 and then falling to the Elks 9-4 during game two of the series. In game one, Alle VanNuck walked twice and scored two runs. Lahna Malonen walked twice, stole two bases, and scored one run. Katy Hayden scored a run. In game two, Jaden Efu was 1 for 1 with one run scored. Emily Kline was 1 for 2 with a double and one RBI. Malonen was 1 for 3 with one run scored. It was the season finale for Grayling. The Vikings finished the year with an overall record of 9-8-1.

Varsity baseball was swept by Elk Rapids, 3-4 and 3-5, Thursday night. Brodie Gross pitched 2.1 innings and struck out four, giving up one hit and three walks. In 2.2 innings of relief, Austin Schwartz struck out five and allowed one hit, four walks and four runs. Aydden Clark, Trevor Cvitkovich and Vaughn Gaertner all took a turn on the mound in game two. From the plate, Gross hit 2 for 4 and scored one run. Corbin Allen hit two doubles in five at bats, scored one run and had two RBI. Cvitkovich was 2 for 6 with one run and an RBI. Jake Huspen hit another bomb, going 2 for 6 with an RBI and two runs scored. Mason Strohpaul was 1 for 1 and had two RBI.
