Our 4th-grade STEM students worked together on an Earth Science lab last week. Students learned about the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and explored the effects of oil spills on oceans, animals, and the environment. Students put on their “science hats” and worked through a hands-on challenge to test different methods for cleaning up an oil spill. Through this activity, students learned about human impact on Earth’s systems and how engineers and scientists work to solve environmental problems. Our students worked hard, persevered, and were true problem solvers!

Last week we celebrated another successful Field Day here at GES where students got to spend extra time outside on the playground competing in a few different events and enjoying some special activities. We want to give a big thanks to the GHS students who came and spent their day running stations, the GES PTO for providing snow cones for all of our students and Millikin Portables for providing sanitation equipment to keep our kiddos OUTSIDE and playing the whole time.
We also want to give a big shout-out to our grade-level winners of the class v. class Tug-of-War contests: 4th Grade Mrs. Ranville's class, 3rd Grade Ms. Tedford's class, 2nd Grade Ms. Baerlocher's class, 1st Grade Mrs. Cobb's Cool Cats, and Kindergarten Mrs. Vincent's class. We can't wait until next year when we get to do it all again.
Here are a few pictures from the day and the album can be viewed at:

Mrs. Kososky's class practiced belly breathing using bubbles! As they slowly blew the bubbles, they focused on calming their bodies. Then, they had fun popping them—imagining they were their “unhelpful thoughts” floating away. A simple, playful way to build mindfulness and support SEL skills!

In our Kindergarten STEM lesson, we explored how clouds form and how rain happens by making a “cloud in a jar.” We filled a clear jar with water, added a layer of shaving cream on top to act like a cloud, and then slowly dropped colored water onto the “cloud.”
As the shaving cream cloud filled up, the colored water began to fall through—just like rain! This helped students see that when real clouds get too full of water droplets, they release the water as rain. It was a fun, hands-on way to understand weather in action.

The Buddy classes of Mrs. Cobb's 4th grade and Mrs. Cobb's 1st grade had guest presenters from Huron Pines to teach students about local pollinators and the importance of native wildflowers. Each student planted at least 1 cell of native flower seeds: Black-eyed Susan, Coreopsis, Wild Bergamot, and Yarrow. The 4th graders are growing them in their classroom until the end of May, when Huron Pines staff will be back for a buddy planting day to create a new wildflower plot on campus!
