From The First Hundred Years:
An Introduction to the History of the Grayling Area
Grayling, Michigan ~ 1973

"The Grayling School," pages 84-86
Today the Crawford-AuSable School District is a combination of the many schools, both large and small, which used to comprise the educational system of the County. Long gone are the small rural schools. The last one was the Feldhauser School. But consolidation has not been without sacrifice and the growth of the School District has long been beset by problems, many of which were, and continue to be, financial.

The first school in the Grayling area took place in a cedar shanty located near the present County Building. At that time, there were six children of school age reported in the area, three of whom attended school on a regular basis. Later the school was moved to a lumber camp building which stood on the block behind the present Black and White Grocery. But growth took place and soon that small school needed larger facilities, so the old Town Hall Building was built for the purpose. It was the first school built in Grayling. At the time it was just about half the size of its present size. This building was used until 1883, when a new school building was built. Three additions were made before the school burned shortly after noon on a cold January day in 1925. In the meanwhile, residents on the south side of town had become increasing concerned about the winter education of the children in kindergarten and the lower grades. A petition to build a South Side School was made to the School Board. "The long cold winters and heavy snows render it difficult for those children to get to our central school. They are practically babies and such a move would be a blessing for them, and a satisfaction to the parents to know that their little ones won't have to face these exposures. Besides this would greatly relieve the congestion in the present grades." A month later, October 19, 1911, a Special Meeting was held at which twenty-five persons appeared. Mostly from the South Side, they rejected by ballot a proposed South Side School by a vote of twenty-three to two. Yet, somehow the school was indeed built and opened its doors for some ninety children through the fourth grade in November, 1913. The presence of the new South Side School did nothing to help the immediate need for space after the High School burned in 1915. The six seniors and other students were without classroom space. But not for long. Classes were quickly set up in various churches, the old Temple Theater, and the Town Hall. The six teachers, the Board of Education and the students carried on until a new school could be built.

Considerable debate developed over the new school. The Avalanche at that time reported:
"One may hear all kinds of talk about what kind of a school should be built. One report is around that we should build two buildings, one to be located on the site of the one burned, for the grades, and the other near the fish hatchery for the high school. Of course, this idea will never materialize.

Another idea is for a 'six and six building'. This is a building for six grades on the first floor and six on the second floor, the latter to be a high school. This is a modern idea and is reported to be very successful.

There will be about $15,000 insurance available and some are in favor of adding $10,000 with which to erect a building; others want a building to cost no less than $100,000. Of course, these two amounts are extremes, one low and the other beyond all necessity."

Again, in a later issue, is: "Architect Jens Peterson of Traverse City was present on election day to explain drawings. The question that is agitating the people most at present is regarding the location of the building on the block. Some want it to face West and some East, while still others want it to face North or South. According to the dimensions of the building, the latter ways would only allow 30 feet of land at each side of the structure. Should it face West it would face a block containing the town hall sheds, Bauman's and Michelson barns. Mr. Bauman says that he intends to remove his barn and build two houses on these lots, and it it believed that the township will ultimately remove their unsightly sheds.

The streets in Grayling do not run parallel North and South but at an angle of about 45 degrees, and it has been suggested that the building be placed due North and South, which would make it on an angle with the block and ridiculously awkward."

In 1916, the new school opened its doors. At the time, the school was too large for the number of students, but the foresight of the early optimistic planners of 1915 was justified as the school later went through extensive modification including the unheard of remodeling of the gym into additional classrooms.  The State generally frowned darkly on such schemes.

In 1955 the present Community - Auditorium - Gymnasium was completed. In 1964 the Elementary School was built to house an expected 600 students. Enrollment in the spring of 1972 had reached 889, indicating more than anything else that, while foresight had been present, funds were not. At the present, a new high school is being built to house 850 students in grades 9 through 12. It is hoped that it will be ready for occupancy in September of 1973.

The little one room schools with the pot bellied stoves and the outdoor privies are long gone, along with the readin', writin' and 'rithmetic books and the dedicated teachers who worked for little or nothing.

Gone, too, are the long walks to and from school in deep snow and howling winds. All is replaced with new, modern schools, trained teachers, efficient office management and programmed athletics. The old schools are to be missed, for they did in fact educate those who made it possible for later generation to achieve a degree of knowledge undreamed of just a generation ago.
