January 2009
CASD Students, Parents & Staff:
The administration of CASD would like you to be aware of the
following information regarding pertussis (whooping cough) that we
received from Dr. James Wilson, Medical Director of District Health
Department #10:
"As of January 26, 2009, there has been an increase in
pertussis cases in some of our neighboring counties. Pertussis
(whooping cough) is a contagious disease of the respiratory tract.
It can occur at any age. Sometimes it is hard to diagnose because it
has some of the same symptoms of a cold (cough).
There is vaccine to protect children and adults
against pertussis. Your child probably received a series of
pertussis vaccines in combination with diphtheria and tetanus
starting at two months of age with booster doses. There is now a
pertussis vaccine for adolescents and adults that is recommended.
Everyone should have a booster dose of vaccine every ten years.
If your child is not complete on his/her
immunizations, we recommend that you consider having your child
immunized at this time. You may contact your private health care
provider or call your local health provider or call your local
health department to schedule an appointment."
